Common Orthodontic Emergencies

At the beginning of your orthodontic treatment, it is normal to feel some discomfort and soreness as your teeth get used to your new appliances. When your teeth begin to move into their new positions, it may cause some pain, which is not unusual. Here are some common orthodontic emergencies so you can feel informed and prepared in case it happens to you:

  • Ulcers/Mouth Sores: It’s very common for your braces to rub against the inside of your mouth, especially your cheeks, and this may cause ulcers or sores to develop. We recommend using orthodontic wax to place over the bracket that is rubbing against your cheek in order to prevent more irritation.

  • Broken Bracket: At Minera Orthodontics, we use advanced orthodontic appliances that are durable, but sometimes eating certain foods and indulging in hard candies can cause brackets to fall off or become loose. If that happens, please contact our Warrenton office so we can repair it.

  • Loose Wire: Wires connect your brackets, and every now and then, they may slide out of place and rub against the mouth. The best solution is to grab a Q-tip and gently push it flat against the tooth. If it’s still uncomfortable, cover it with orthodontic wax and call our office at (540) 349-1331 so our team can fix the problem.

  • Elastics Pop Off: Elastics, or rubber bands, keep the wire and bracket in place. If one pops off, you might be able to reposition it with tweezers. Otherwise, you can remove it, but make sure to call our office to prevent any brackets or wires from coming loose or falling off.

  • Loose Teeth: It’s natural for your teeth to feel like they may be loose during orthodontic treatment as they are constantly shifting to a new position. There’s nothing you need to do—just stay calm and confident that your treatment is going according to plan.

Preventing Orthodontic Emergencies

There are certain steps you can take in order to help prevent orthodontic emergencies during the course of your treatment at Minera Orthodontics in Warrenton, VA.

  • Avoid sticky, crunchy or hard foods: These foods can cause your brackets to break and wires to become loose.

  • Wear a mouthguard during sporting events: If you play sports, protect your teeth, gums and orthodontic appliances with a mouthguard to stop preventable orthodontic emergencies.

  • Follow our care instructions to a T: Simply stated–if you follow our team’s thorough guidelines, your smile adventure will be smooth sailing!

  • Don’t skip your regular check-ups: These visits are important for us to track and monitor your treatment and make sure your appliances are in tip-top shape. Plus, it allows our team to detect any problems like a bracket becoming loose before it becomes a bigger problem.
